RTC Participation Now Exceeds 100 Businesses and Organizations

Washington, D.C. – The Renewable Thermal Collaborative (RTC), the only global coalition focused exclusively on the decarbonization of thermal energy with renewable solutions, today shared its Quarterly Update on Industrial Decarbonization (QUID) for the third quarter of 2024. Highlights include: the Collaborative held its annual Summit, sold-out and the largest in its history; four new Solutions Providers joined the RTC, bringing the total number of participating companies to more than 100; the RTC released two case studies and a congressional policy priorities fact sheet; the RTC conducted two events; and one RTC Member and four RTC Solutions Providers announced new projects. These highlights represent some, but not all, of the progress being made towards the RTC objective of accelerating the pace of industrial decarbonization to meet climate targets.

“Our Summit grows every year and this year’s record-breaking attendance demonstrated once again that interest and engagement in industrial decarbonization is growing across the board,” declared Blaine Collison, RTC Executive Director. “The insights and information shared this year will help us to continue to refine our focus to address the biggest and most significant challenges to the continued development and deployment of renewable thermal technologies.”

Highlights of the third quarter of 2024 include the following:

1) Annual Summit in Washington, D.C.

The RTC’s 2024 Summit brought 300 people together in Washington, D.C., at the end of September to share perspectives and recommendations on the challenges and opportunities of industrial decarbonization in industries including  food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper, chemicals, and manufacturing. Content included panel discussions on solutions being adopted by RTC Members, highlights of challenges RTC Members and Solutions Providers are addressing in their businesses, and spotlights on successes RTC Members and Solutions Providers are achieving, which can be instructional for others to consider in the future.

2) Four New Solutions Providers

With the addition of the following companies last quarter, the RTC includes 47 Members and 56 Solutions Providers in the United States and around the world, more than 100 participants in all. Members include global industrial and institutional energy buyers representing more than $6.5 trillion in market capitalization across a diverse range of industries, including chemical, food and beverage, manufacturing, and pharmaceuticals. Solutions Providers are technology companies, advisors, developers, and others working to accelerate the renewable thermal market.

New Solutions Providers

Acceleware provides scalable electromagnetic (EM) solutions for large industrial applications, including industrial heating processes previously considered difficult to abate. They are the first EM Solutions Provider to join the RTC.

Echogen Power Solutions produces scalable heat-to-power systems. Their process captures heat energy, which would normally be lost, and converts it into higher value, usable power.

Fervo Energy provides 24/7 carbon-free energy through the development of next-generation geothermal power. They are the first geothermal Solutions Provider to join the RTC.

Karman Industries is developing the Thermal01 electric heat pump, a modular high-temperature option for industrial manufacturers, allowing for affordable electrification for a wide range of customers.

3) Five New Publications and Events

The Collaborative released two case studies and a congressional policy priorities fact sheet, and convened two events in the third quarter of 2024:

Publications

Fact Sheet: 2024 Congressional Policy Priorities to Enhance American Manufacturing Competitiveness: This fact sheet outline’s the RTC’s strategy to strengthen American energy security, create high-quality jobs, advance technology innovation, and modernize manufacturing facilities. Drafted with input from the RTC’s diverse membership of industrial leaders and solution providers, it details three priorities that offer policymakers a roadmap for enhancing U.S. manufacturing competitiveness while addressing the critical challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from industrial process heating and cooling.

Case Study: Solar Thermal at Boortmalt Malting Plant: This case study details the partnership between Boortmalt, a global malting company and Axereal subsidiary, and RTC Solutions Provider Kyotherm to finance a solar thermal plant at Boortmalt’s malting facility in Issoudun, France. It provides an in-depth look at Kyotherm’s Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) financing model that enabled Boortmalt to install the system with no capital expenditure.

Case Study: Solar Thermal at the Indianapolis International Airport: This case study details the partnership between the Indianapolis Airport Authority (IAA) and RTC Solutions Provider Solar UV Solutions to install a solar thermal system on the roof of the Consolidated Snow Removal and Equipment Storage facility at the Indianapolis International Airport. It highlights the solar thermal system’s durability, minimal maintenance requirements, and the IAA’s plans for expanding solar thermal technology to other airport facilities.

Events

Unlocking the Future: Success Stories in Decarbonizing Industrial Thermal Energy: Hosted during Climate Week in New York City, this in-person event featured RTC Members sharing details and key learnings of recent, real-world renewable thermal energy projects.

Case Study Webinar: AstraZeneca & Vanguard Renewables U.S. RNG Agreement: This webinar explored the groundbreaking renewable natural gas (RNG) agreement between RTC Member AstraZeneca and RTC Solutions Provider Vanguard Renewables. The speakers discussed how the agreement to supply AstraZeneca with 650,000 MMBtu/year for 15 or more years contributes to the company’s ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its global operations (Scope 1 and 2) by 98% by 2026.

4) Four New Member & Solutions Provider Projects

The RTC is the only place where large thermal energy users come together collaboratively with innovative solutions providers to understand the problems in the market, learn from each other, and overcome the barriers to renewable heating and cooling. Four RTC Members and four RTC Solutions Providers announced new projects in the Second Quarter. To learn more about these announcements, visit the RTC LinkedIn page
