Case Study: Solar Thermal at the Indianapolis International Airport

Learn how the Indianapolis Airport Authority (IAA) partnered with RTC Solutions Provider Solar UV Solutions to install a solar thermal system at the Indianapolis International Airport (IND). This case study details how the IAA installed 70 SunQuest 250 solar thermal collectors on the roof of IND’s new Consolidated Snow Removal and Equipment Storage facility. Commissioned in October 2021, the system heats water for space heating, and generated 70% of the facility’s heat demand in its first winter of operation. This project reduced the IAA’s energy costs by over 50% and avoided 574 metric tons of annual CO2 emissions, equivalent to removing 137 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles from the road. The case study highlights the system’s durability, minimal maintenance requirements, and the IAA’s plans for expanding solar thermal technology to other airport facilities, demonstrating a successful step towards its Net Zero by 2050 goal.
