The Massachusetts Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard for retail electricity suppliers was established in Section 11F of the Massachusetts General Laws, Title II, Chapter 25A. It began with a requirement that suppliers source 4% of energy from renewable sources by 2009, and was updated by the Green Communities Act of 2008 to increase by 1% annually. Eligible technologies include solar thermal electric, landfill methane, anaerobic digester gas, geothermal energy, and biomass fuel.
