Response to SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0 Consultation Survey

The Renewable Thermal Collaborative (RTC) has submitted comments to the Science-based Targets Initiative (SBTi) on its Corporate Net-Zero Standard (CNZS) V2.0 Consultation Survey. The RTC argues that the draft standard’s focus on Scope 1 targets without considering indirect mitigation or real-world barriers could deter companies from setting targets, slow investment, and hinder innovation in decarbonization. The RTC urges SBTi to create a working group to explore indirect mitigation options for Scope 1 emissions, clarify the definition of “insurmountable barriers,” and acknowledge options that can help companies decarbonize their value chains. These recommendations aim to accelerate investment and the adoption of renewable thermal energy technologies.
