Special Assessment for Solar Energy Systems

Section 200/10-10 of the Illinois Compiled Statutes Property Tax Code establishes an alternate valuation assessment for solar energy systems. When the owner of a property with a solar energy system files a claim for an alternate valuation, the chief county assessment officer ascertains both the value of the improvements as equipped with the solar energy system and the value of the improvements as if equipped with a conventional heating or cooling system. The lesser of the two values is applied as the alternate valuation. The definition of a solar energy system includes those that use solar energy for heating or cooling.
