The Illinois Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) requires large investor-owned electric utilities and alternative retail electric suppliers to source 10% of eligible retail electricity sales from renewable energy by 2015 and 25% by 2025. The standard was enacted in 2007 and updated in 2021 by Senate Bill 2408, which extended the RPS to require 50% by 2040. A number of renewable thermal technologies and fuels are eligible sources of clean energy.
