The Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs program was introduced in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) of 2021. The program includes up to $8 billion to establish six to ten regional clean hydrogen hubs nationwide. These hubs aim to connect hydrogen producers, consumers, and local connective infrastructure, creating the essential network that will allow for the use of hydrogen as an energy carrier capable of delivering or storing large amounts of energy. This improved clean energy pathway is intended to make large strides toward decarbonizing heavy industry and transportation. The selection criteria necessitates diverse feedstocks and end-uses, requiring that to the maximum extent practicable one of the hubs will demonstrate the production of clean hydrogen from fossil fuels, one from renewable energy, one from nuclear energy, and one hub will demonstrate the end-use of clean hydrogen in the electric power generation sector, one in the industrial sector, one in the commercial and residential heating sector, and one in the transportation sector. The deadline for applications has passed as of 2023.
