The Long Duration Storage Shot program was the second of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Energy Earthshots Initiative, announced in July 2021. The program aims to accelerate breakthroughs in affordable and reliable energy grid technologies, including thermal storage, targeting a 90% cost reduction of grid-scale energy storage that delivers 10+ hours of duration within the decade. Advancements in energy storage capabilities could lead to full decarbonization of the electric grid, as renewable energy generation would become more resilient and able to meet demand at any time, granting flexibility despite intermittent generation.
