Energy Storage Pilot Grant Program

The Energy Storage Demonstration and Pilot Grant Program was authorized by the Energy Act of 2020 and funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) of 2021. The program, led by the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED), is designed to provide $355 million to carry out three energy storage system demonstration projects through grants to technology developers, industry, local governments, utilities, and other organizations. The program aims to improve the security of critical infrastructure and the reliability of transmission and distribution systems, particularly in rural areas. These projects may better integrate renewable energy resource production by enabling the use of stored energy in forms other than electricity. Eligible renewable thermal technologies include various energy storage systems, such as thermal storage.
