Comments on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol: Draft Land Sector and Removals Guidance
In September 2022, the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP) published a draft of the Land Sector and Removals Guidance which included Annex B: Biomethane. The annex sought to clarify GHGP guidance on the use of renewable natural gas (RNG) certificates, effectively disallowing their use for RNG injected into common carrier pipelines.
After consultations with RTC Members and Solutions Providers through the GHG Accounting & Market Instruments Working Group, the RTC submitted comments to GHGP during the public comment period. The comments encouraged GHGP to remove Annex B from the final Land Sector and Removals guidance.
In August 2023, GHGP informed stakeholders that Annex B: Biomethane would not be included in the final Land Sector and Removals guidance, consistent with the RTC’s preference. GHGP stated that the final guidance will be published by the end of 2023. Read the GHGP announcement here.
