Vermont’s Renewable Energy Standard requires all retail electricity suppliers to source a certain percentage of their annual electricity sales from renewable resources. The requirement has been increasing 4% annually since the initial 2017 benchmark, which was 55%. The RPS will ultimately require 75% of electricity sales to be derived from renewable resources by January 1, 2032. In addition, 10% of electricity sales must come from eligible distributed renewable generation sources and 12% must come from energy transformation projects (including geothermal heat pumps, solar thermal systems, and other thermal technologies). Suppliers can achieve compliance through Renewable Energy Credits and alternative compliance payments.
