Puerto Rico’s Renewable Portfolio Standard requires all retail electric providers with a capacity of 50,000 MWh per year to derive 100% of retail electricity sales from renewable energy resources by 2050. There are incremental requirements leading up to 2050. In addition, coal must be phased out completely by January 1, 2028 and all public lighting must be replaced with LEDs or renewable energy by 2030. Currently, the Autoridad de Energía Eléctrica de Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority or PREPA) is the only provider that is subject to this requirement. Qualifying providers can achieve compliance through Renewable Energy Credits.
