Farmland that uses biomass, solar, or wind energy generating systems can have those systems assessed under the Farmland Assessment Act under certain conditions. The land and systems on it must be part of an operating farm during the assessment year and the year prior. The power and heat output of the systems must serve the farm, but do not need to exclusively serve the farm. The ratio of land devoted to energy production and the land being used for agriculture cannot exceed a 1:5 acre ratio. Facilities used for energy generation must be smaller than 10 acres overall and must have a generating capacity less than 2 MW. For biomass systems, the land used to produce biomass fuels need not be included in the definition of land used for energy production.
