Renewable Portfolio Standard

Maine’s renewable portfolio standard, updated in 2019, requires that 80% of electricity sold in the state be supplied by renewable energy sources by 2030. LD 1494, “An Act To Reform Maine’s Renewable Portfolio Standard”, also established a new renewable thermal portfolio standard to incentivize efficient heating and cooling installations, requiring electric utilities to purchase renewable thermal credits in amounts phasing up to 4% of the total energy they sell by 2030. Technologies whose utilization can generate renewable thermal credits include solar thermal, biomass, biogas, or liquid biofuels.
