SUMMARY:RTC Webinar: Thermal Batteries: Opportunities to Accelerate Decarbonization of Industrial Heating
DESCRIPTION:Thermal battery technology presents the opportunity to draw from increasingly abundant renewable electricity sources to reduce nearly all greenhouse gas emissions from industrial heat – a sizable portion of overall U.S. emissions. Thermal batteries convert clean electricity through grid and off-grid sources into continuous industrial heat using simple components and storage materials while helping to balance the power grid. \nTo better understand the potential benefits of and barriers to the use of this technology for decarbonization\, the RTC published the report Thermal Batteries: Opportunities to Accelerate Decarbonization of Industrial Heating\, prepared in partnership with The Brattle Group. The report found that thermal batteries can be cost-competitive in much of the U.S. today\, and that opportunity will likely grow along with the continued buildout of renewable electricity sources. Based on modeling as well as interviews with industrial energy buyers and thermal battery developers\, the report offers a clear view of use cases where thermal batteries will be most cost-competitive for industrial companies and makes recommendations for policymakers and electricity market operators to further unlock the technology by addressing regulatory barriers. \nThe RTC released the report via webinar on October 5. Speakers at the event included:\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoron Brenmiller\, Executive Vice President of Commercial\, Brenmiller\nBlaine Collison\, Executive Director\, Renewable Thermal Collaborative\nCaroline Jo\, Vice President of Project Finance\, Rondo Energy\n\nChris Kardish\, Senior Manager of Industrial Decarbonization\, Center for Climate and Energy Solutions\nNick Soncrant\, Head of Business Development\, Antora Energy \nKathleen Spees\, Principal\, The Brattle Group \nPhillip Stephenson\, Vice President of Business Development\, Electrified Thermal Solutions \nGreg Wellman\, Technology Manager of Decarbonization\, Eastman \n\n  \n\n\nTo watch the webinar recording\, fill out the form below:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form. Please enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form.Name *FirstLastEmail *Organization * \n the Organization to\n \n \n Title *Would you like to receive occasional updates from the RTC? *YesNoWatch the Recording \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRelated Materials:\n\n\n\n\n\n Thermal Batteries: Opportunities to Accelerate Decarbonization of Industrial Heating \n Press Release

SUMMARY:Webinar: RTC Playbook for Decarbonizing Process Heat in the Food and Beverage Sector
DESCRIPTION:In the U.S.\, food and beverage processing and manufacturing produces more emissions from industrial heat use than any sector other than refineries\, chemicals\, or iron & steel. The low-temperature heat accounts for 97% of the thermal energy use in this sector\, making electrification with heat pumps and electric boilers a promising opportunity for cutting emissions in the near-term. \nTo accelerate decarbonization in this critical sector\, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Guidehouse co-authored the Playbook for Decarbonizing Process Heat in the Food and Beverage Sector on behalf of the Renewable Thermal Collaborative (RTC). On August 8\, the RTC hosted a webinar to release the Playbook\, featuring presentations from its lead authors about their insights.\n \nSpeakers included: \n\nBlaine Collison\, Executive Director\, Renewable Thermal Collaborative\nVincent Hoen.\, Director\, Guidehouse Sustainability\nAnne Kirk\, Project Manager\, Guidehouse Sustainability\nGrant Samms\, Research Analyst\, Guidehouse Insights\nOyin Talabi\, Technial Analys\, Americas and Asia\, Guidehouse Sustainability\nCihang Yuan\, Program Officer\, International Corporate Climate Partnership\, World Wildlife Fund\n\nThe event outlined the findings of the playbook\, outlining the major technology\, market\, and policy barriers to heat pump and electric boiler adoption\, and explained our concrete\, actionable recommendations for energy buyers and other stakeholders in the sector looking to deploy these technologies to decarbonize. \n  \n Fill out the form below to watch the webinar recording: \nPlease enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form. Please enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form.Name *FirstLastEmail *Organization * \n updates Would you\n \n \n Title *Would you like to receive occasional updates from the RTC? *YesNoWatch the Recording

SUMMARY:Report Release Webinar: Industrial Electrification in U.S. States Report
DESCRIPTION:On February 23\, from 11 am – 12 pm ET\, the Renewable Thermal Collaborative (RTC) hosted a webinar launching the Industrial Electrification in U.S. States report\, created by Global Efficiency Intelligence (GEI) and David Gardiner & Associates. \nMeeting the United States’ goals of reducing carbon emissions by 50-52% by 2035 requires a concentrated effort to develop and deploy clean technologies across sectors. The country’s industrial sector poses a severe challenge: while the share of renewable energy used to generate electricity continues to grow\, so does the use of thermal energy to produce heat. Previous analyses\, including the Renewable Thermal Vision Report\, have identified an opportunity to reduce thermal emissions through electrification\, leveraging the rise of renewable electricity to power industrial processes. \nThis report analyzes a handful of industries and the impact electrification would have on their energy use\, emissions\, and energy costs. Because industrial facilities\, policy\, and renewable energy resources vary across geographies\, this study takes a state-by-state approach\, describing the impacts and benefits of electrification in 20 different jurisdictions. The report makes six recommendations for policymakers looking to electrify their state’s industrial heat use: supporting emerging technologies\, using financial incentives\, increasing renewable electricity generation\, enhancing the grid\, engaging communities\, and growing the workforce. \nDownload the Report. \n\n\n  \nFill out the form below to view the webinar recording: \nPlease enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form. Please enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form.Name *FirstLastEmail *Organization * \n receive occasional Title\n \n \n Job Title *Would you like to receive occasional updates from the RTC? *YesNoWatch the Recording

SUMMARY:Climate Week 2020 Panel: The Road to Decarbonizing Industrial Heat: The Need for a Clean Heat Strategy
DESCRIPTION:Heat is the largest contribution to energy consumption in our society. To address the climate emergency\, we urgently need to decarbonize the energy required for heat in buildings and industrial processes. However\, natural gas remains the predominant source of heating for both the healthcare industry and business at large in many countries. The current reality is that availability of green gas is limited and is not meeting growing demands. A clean heat strategy is required that addresses the role renewable electricity plays alongside other alternative low-carbon technologies such as green gas\, hydrogen and fuel cells. We need to drive private and public sector partnership to ensure that infrastructure and investment exists to meet the demand for clean heat and tackle the climate crisis. \nPanelists included: \n\nDavid Croft – Global Director Sustainability\, Environment & Human Rights\, RB\nDr Julio Friedmann – Senior Research Scholar\, Columbia University SIPA\nLouise Nicholls – Managing Director\, Suseco\nBen Norbury – Global Climate Lead\, AstraZeneca\nMarty Spitzer – Senior Director\, Climate and Renewable Energy\, World Wildlife Fund\n\nTo watch a full recording of the event\, click here.
